Tech Debt#

Mock Generator Incomplete Field Type Support:

  • Issue: internal/httpgen/mock_generator.go contains TODO comments for unimplemented field type handling in repeated message fields and multiple numeric/enum types (lines 202, 218, 220)
  • Files: internal/httpgen/mock_generator.go (lines 201-221)
  • Impact: Generated mock servers will have placeholder comments instead of proper field population for repeated messages, enum fields, and fixed-size integer types. Mock data will be incomplete, reducing test utility.
  • Fix approach: Implement generateMockFieldAssignments() to handle all protoreflect field kinds: MessageKind repeated fields, EnumKind, Sint32Kind, Uint32Kind, Sint64Kind, Uint64Kind, Sfixed32Kind, Fixed32Kind, Sfixed64Kind, Fixed64Kind, and BytesKind

Deprecated Random Seeding in Generated Code:

  • Issue: internal/httpgen/mock_generator.go:486 generates rand.Seed(time.Now().UnixNano()) in the init function, which is deprecated in Go 1.20+
  • Files: internal/httpgen/mock_generator.go (line 486)
  • Impact: Generated mock files will contain deprecated API calls, producing compiler warnings in Go 1.20+. No functional impact but signals outdated patterns.
  • Fix approach: Remove the deprecated rand.Seed() call entirely (Go 1.20+ seeds automatically). Remove the associated init function generation in generateInitFunction().

Silent Error Suppression in Unwrap Field Collection:

  • Issue: internal/httpgen/unwrap.go:87-90 silently continues when getUnwrapField() returns an error with only a comment "This suppresses errors for messages that fail validation"
  • Files: internal/httpgen/unwrap.go (lines 84-98)
  • Impact: Validation errors are completely hidden. Messages with invalid unwrap annotations are skipped without warning, potentially leading to incorrect unwrap behavior and difficult-to-diagnose runtime issues.
  • Fix approach: Collect and log/report these errors. Consider returning them from generateUnwrapFile() with context about which messages failed validation.

Known Bugs#

Nil Pointer Dereference Risk in Map Value Type Access:

  • Symptoms: Potential panic when accessing map field value message without bounds checking
  • Files: internal/httpgen/mock_generator.go (lines 234-235)
  • Trigger: When field.Message.Fields has fewer than 2 elements for a map field (malformed map entry message)
  • Workaround: Map entry messages are always 2-field structures by protobuf spec, but code doesn't validate this before indexing
  • Fix approach: Add defensive check: if len(field.Message.Fields) < 2 { return } before accessing Fields[0] and Fields[1]

Missing Null Check in Root Unwrap Generation:

  • Symptoms: Generated code may fail when processing nil pointer dereferences
  • Files: internal/httpgen/unwrap.go (lines 124-131)
  • Trigger: When getMapValueMessage() returns nil for a map field, rootUnwrap.ValueMessage is left nil but code later attempts to use it
  • Current mitigation: Code checks if valueMsg != nil but downstream code may assume it's non-nil
  • Recommendations: Assert that root unwrap messages always have valid value messages, or skip generation for malformed cases

Security Considerations#

Protocol Buffer Unmarshaling Without Validation:

  • Risk: Generated unwrap unmarshal methods accept arbitrary JSON and unmarshal to protobuf messages without running validators
  • Files: internal/httpgen/unwrap.go (methods UnmarshalJSON() throughout)
  • Current mitigation: HTTP handler has separate validation middleware that validates after binding, but direct use of generated UnmarshalJSON bypasses this
  • Recommendations: Document that UnmarshalJSON does not validate - validation must be applied separately by calling code; consider adding a comment in generated code warning about this

Test Code Uses os/exec Without Input Sanitization:

  • Risk: Test files spawn protoc processes using command arguments from test data
  • Files: internal/openapiv3/exhaustive_golden_test.go, internal/openapiv3/integration_test.go, internal/httpgen/golden_test.go, internal/clientgen/golden_test.go, internal/tsclientgen/golden_test.go (multiple lines with exec.Command())
  • Current mitigation: Test data is hardcoded, not user-supplied; processes are only run during testing
  • Recommendations: This is low risk for tests but document that real usage should never pass untrusted paths to protoc command generation

Performance Bottlenecks#

Recursive Message Processing Without Cycle Detection:

  • Problem: internal/httpgen/unwrap.go recursively processes nested messages and maps without detecting circular references
  • Files: internal/httpgen/unwrap.go (lines 84-98, 103-138, 142-166)
  • Cause: Functions like collectUnwrapFieldsRecursive() and collectRootUnwrapMessages() don't track visited messages
  • Improvement path: Add visited map[string]bool parameter to recursive functions to prevent infinite recursion on circular message definitions

String Building in Code Generation:

  • Problem: internal/tsclientgen/generator.go uses string concatenation for path building (line 283-287)
  • Files: internal/tsclientgen/generator.go (lines 281-288)
  • Cause: Multiple string operations when building full paths with base path and HTTP path
  • Improvement path: Minor - not a bottleneck for generation-time code, but could use path.Join() or strings.Builder for consistency

Large File Generators Without Streaming:

  • Problem: internal/httpgen/generator.go (1550 lines) and internal/openapiv3/generator.go (613 lines) generate entire files in memory before writing
  • Files: Multiple generator files
  • Cause: protogen.GeneratedFile API generates code in memory then writes atomically
  • Improvement path: Not fixable without changing protogen API - this is acceptable for code generation tools

Fragile Areas#

Unwrap Annotation Processing Logic:

  • Files: internal/httpgen/unwrap.go (entire file, 902 lines)
  • Why fragile: Complex nested message traversal, root vs. non-root message classification, combined map+value unwrap detection. Logic depends on correct protobuf descriptor structure assumptions.
  • Safe modification: Add integration tests for edge cases (nested unwrap, circular references, maps of maps). Ensure all path branches have explicit nil checks.
  • Test coverage: Gaps exist for repeated message fields (TODOs in mock_generator), combined unwrap patterns (map field whose value message also has unwrap)

HTTP Annotation Parsing and Validation:

  • Files: internal/httpgen/annotations.go (392 lines), internal/openapiv3/http_annotations.go (406 lines)
  • Why fragile: Parses HTTP paths with regex, extracts path parameters, validates HTTP methods. String parsing is error-prone.
  • Safe modification: All path parsing should be covered by tests in internal/httpgen/annotations_test.go. Regex patterns should be unit tested separately.
  • Test coverage: Path parsing has good coverage; HTTP method validation coverage is implicit

Generated Code Error Handling Pattern:

  • Files: internal/httpgen/generator.go (error implementation generation, lines 1497-1549)
  • Why fragile: Assumes all messages ending with "Error" should implement error interface. String suffix matching is simplistic.
  • Safe modification: Verify message naming convention won't collide with legitimately-named non-error messages. Consider adding optional annotation to explicitly mark error types.
  • Test coverage: internal/httpgen/error_handler_test.go covers this, but could test negative cases (non-error messages with "Error" suffix)

Scaling Limits#

No Limits on Message Nesting Depth:

  • Current capacity: Recursion depth limited only by Go stack (typically ~1000 frames)
  • Limit: Deeply nested message structures could cause stack overflow during code generation
  • Scaling path: Add depth limit check in recursive functions (recommend max depth 50-100) and return error if exceeded

Memory Usage for Large Proto Files:

  • Current capacity: Entire file code generation held in memory before writing
  • Limit: Very large proto files (1000+ messages) could cause high memory usage
  • Scaling path: Acceptable for code generation tools; if becomes issue, could implement streaming generation

Dependencies at Risk#

libopenapi (pb33f/libopenapi v0.33.0) Dependency:

  • Risk: External library for OpenAPI document modeling, used only in internal/openapiv3/
  • Impact: If library stops being maintained or has breaking changes, OpenAPI generation is blocked
  • Migration plan: Codebase could generate OpenAPI documents using simpler JSON/YAML libraries if needed. Structure in internal/openapiv3/ is loosely coupled.

Protobuf Compiler Plugin API (protogen):

  • Risk: Depends on Google's internal protogen package which could change
  • Impact: Plugin might break with new protoc/protobuf versions
  • Migration plan: Google maintains protogen stably; considered part of Go protobuf ecosystem. Low risk but worth monitoring.

Missing Critical Features#

No Type-Safe Path Parameter Validation:

  • Problem: Path parameters are extracted as strings without type information
  • Blocks: Cannot validate that path parameter types match their protobuf field types at code generation time
  • Files: internal/httpgen/annotations.go, clients depend on runtime validation

Limited Enum Support in Mock Generation:

  • Problem: Mock generator doesn't populate enum fields properly (TODOs in lines 218)
  • Blocks: Generated mock servers can't provide realistic enum values
  • Files: internal/httpgen/mock_generator.go

Test Coverage Gaps#

Mock Generator Field Type Coverage:

TypeScript Client Header Validation:

  • What's not tested: Service-level and method-level header validation in generated TypeScript clients

  • Priority: Medium - security concern for header-based authentication
